Ciao Charlotte. Grazie di avere accettato questa mia intervista e benvenuta su Liberi di scrivere. Sei nata a Berlino, hai studiato lingua e letteraura tedesca e attualmente lavori come scrittrice free-lance ed editor. Raccontaci qualcosa di te, della tua infanzia, del tuo background.

Sono cresciuta in una famiglia di origini russo polacche, con una madre tedesca, un padre napoletano e quattro fratelli. Ho studiato a Napoli e Berlino, poi sono andata a vivere con mio marito, metà andaluso, nato in Gran Bretagna, a Londra, che è la mia casa. Per formazione sono una traduttrice, mi piace la nostra famiglia, un cocktail di europei e amo viaggiare per il mondo, cosa che mi manca profondamente in questo momento.

Hi Charlotte. Thanks for accepting my interview an welcome on Liberi di scrivere. You were born in Berlin, you have studied German language and literature and work actually as a free-lance writer and editor. Tell us somenthing about you, your childhood, your background.

I grew up with a Polish-Russian bred, German born mother, a Neapolitan father and four brothers. I have studied in Naples and Berlin, then went to live with my British born, half Andalusian husband to live in London, which is my home. I am a translator by training, enjoy our European cocktail family and love travelling the world, which I deeply miss at the moment.

Cosa ti ha spinto a diventare una scrittrice? Cosa ti ha fatto decidere di iniziare a scrivere narrativa?

Amo il cinema e volevo fare la regista ma all’ultimo momento non ho avuto il coraggio di andare avanti. Poiché ho sempre scritto, ritengo di mettere su carta le storie che mi sarebbe piaciuto trasformare in film.

What prompted you to become a writer? What made you decide to start writing fiction?

I love cinema and wanted to be a director but at the last second, I didn’t have the courage to go ahead with it. Since I had always been writing I guess I try to put the stories that I would have loved to turn into films on paper instead.

C’è un insegnante che è stato per te fonte di ispirazione, o qualcuno che vuoi ringraziare per i suoi consigli? E quale è il consiglio più importante che hai ricevuto nella tua carriera?

Non proprio, ad essere onesta. Ma mio marito è un insegnante, se questo aiuta … Il consiglio più prezioso l’ho ricevuto dalla mia amica Angelica, che è stata la mia editor per tanti meravigliosi anni quando traducevo libri. Prima che il mio primo romanzo fosse pubblicato, mi disse: “Stai attenta. Un sogno realizzato è anche quello che non hai più.” Dato che essere una scrittrice era già il mio sogno sostitutivo, è stato estremamente utile che mi ricordassero che è meglio smettere di sognare troppo se vuoi pubblicare fiction.

Did you have a teacher who was a particular inspiration to you, or someone that you want to thank for the advices? And what was the most important advice that you have received in your career?

Not really, to be honest. But my husband is a teacher, if that helps … The most vital advice I received from my friend Angelica who was my editor through many wonderful years of translating books. Before my first novel was published, she said to me: “Be careful. A dream fulfilled is also one that you don’t have anymore.” Since being a writer was already my substitute dream, it was extremely helpful to be reminded that you better stop dreaming quickly if you want to publish fiction.

When we were Immortal (Quando eravamo immportali – Sperling & Kupfer) è il tuo romanzo d’esordio, subito diventato un bestseller, e seguito da numerosi altri romanzi sul destino di donne sullo sfondo della storia tedesca. Puoi raccontarci un po’ di questo, e del tuo debutto?

Non è affatto il mio debutto. È solo il mio primo libro con un nuovo pseudonimo, il mio primo bestseller e il mio primo – e purtroppo unico – libro tradotto in italiano. È stato anche il primo libro che ho potuto scrivere sull’argomento di cui ho sempre voluto scrivere: la strada verso il fascismo, il periodo tra le due guerre mondiali e gli errori che sono stati commessi dalle persone che hanno cercato di fermare Hitler. Quando eravamo immortali è la storia della vita della nostra amica di famiglia Margarethe, una delle donne più straordinarie che abbia mai incontrato. Lo devo ai miei amici Cyril, Samantha e Nick che mi hanno regalato due scatole di materiale che lei aveva raccolto, in modo che potessi raccontare la sua storia.

When we were Immortal (Quando eravamo immportali – Sperling & Kupfer) is your debut novel, soon a bestseller, followed by numerous other novels about stories of women’s fate agains the backdrop of German history. Can you tell us a bit about it, about your debut?

It’s not my debut at all. Just my first book under a new pseudonym, my first bestseller and my first – and sadly so far only – book translated into Italian. It was also the first book that I was able to write about the subject I always wanted to write about: The way into fascism, the time of the two world wars and the mistakes that were made by the people who tried to stop Hitler. Quando eravamo immortali is the life story of our family friend Margarethe who was one of the most impressive women I have ever met. I owe it to my friends Cyril, Samantha and Nick who giftet me with the two boxes of material she had collected, so that I could tell her story.

Cosa ti ha ispirato a scriverlo. Quale è stato il punto di partenza del processo creativo? È un romanzo ispirato alla storia della tua famiglia?

Margarethe faceva il miglior caffè del mondo. Un giorno, poco prima di lasciare la scuola, eravamo tutti a casa sua, e quando è andata nella sua enorme meravigliosa cucina per farlo, l’ho seguita e le ho chiesto chi le avesse insegnato a farlo. Si voltò ed è stata la prima e unica volta che l’ho vista piangere. Ha detto che un giorno me l’avrebbe detto, ma avrei dovuto scriverlo. Mi ci sono voluti 25 anni fino a che finalmente l’ho fatto.

What inspired you to write it? What was the starting point in the writing process? Is this novel inspired by the story of your family?

Margarethe made the world’s best coffee. One day, shortly before we were leaving school, we were all in her house, and when she went to her wonderful huge kitchen to make it I followed her and asked her who taught her to make it. She turned around, and it was the first and only time I saw her cry. She said she would tell me one day – but I would have to write it down. It took me 25 years until I finally did.

Pensi sia caratterizzato da una particolare visione femminile della storia? Ti senti un’autrice femminista, se per te questa definizione ha un senso. O pensi che non ci sia differenza tra scrittura femminile e maschile?

No. Scrivo di donne perché gli editori non mi permettono di scrivere di uomini. Ammetto liberamente che lo preferirei perché quello di cui voglio scrivere è guerra e politica e potrei avvicinarmi molto di più a un protagonista malvagio. Ovviamente mi sento una femminista. Ma come femminista mi sarebbe piaciuto poter scrivere le storie che più mi interessano.

Do you think it is characterized by a particular feminine vision of history? Do you feel like a feminist author, if that definition makes sense. Or do you think there is no reeling between masculine and feminine in writing?

No. I write about women because publishers don’t allow me to write about men. I do freely admit that I would prefer it because what I want to write about is war and politics and I could get much closer with a mal protagonist. I feel of course as a feminist. But as a feminist I would have liked to be allowed to write the stories that most interest me.

Gli aspetti psicologici sono importanti nel tuo romanzo?

Are the psychological aspect of the story important in your novel?

A essere onesta – non lo so.

To be honest – I don’t know.

Leggi altri autori contemporanei? Quali sono i tuoi scrittori preferiti? Chi pensi abbia influenzato la tua scrittura?

Tra gli scrittori viventi i miei preferiti in assoluto sono Orhan Pamuk e Stewart O’Nan. Non credo che mi abbiano influenzato perché sono miglia meglio di quanto mai potrei essere.

Do you read other contemporary writers? Who are some of your favourite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

Among the living writers my absolute favourites are Orhan Pamuk and Stewart O’Nan. I don’t think they have influenced me because they are miles better than I could ever be.

Al momento sto leggendo “Midwinter Break” di Bernard MacLaverty, che è meraviglioso.

What are you reading at the moment?

At the moment I read “Midwinter Break” by Bernard MacLaverty, which is wonderful.

Ti piace fare tour promozionali? Racconta ai tuoi lettori italiani qualche aneddoto divertente accaduto durante questi incontri.

Non li faccio molto spesso. Dato che le librerie che mi prenotano devono pagare il volo e l’albergo oltre alle mie tariffe, sono semplicemente troppo costosa. Però faccio un breve tour per ogni libro (non da quando c’è il Corona virus, però…) e mi diverto sempre a incontrare persone a cui piacciono i miei libri, anche se non sono per niente una persona che ama la scena e mi sento molto nervosa a leggere i miei libri in pubblico.

Do you enjoy touring for literary promotion? Tell to our Italian readers something of amusing about these meetings.

I don’t do it very often. As the bookshops who book me have to pay for flight and hotel in addition to my fees, I am simply too expensive. I do a short tour for each book though (not since Corona, however …) and always enjoy to meet the people that actually like my books, even though I am not at all a stage person and feel very nervous to read in public.

What is your relationship with your readers? How can readers get in touch with you? Tou use the social recources?

I have a facebook page Charlotte Lyne Carmen Lobato Charlotte Roth and an Instagram account CharlieLyne (that’s my name, Roth is a pseudonym). I am always very happy to hear from readers and will try to answer every message, even if it can take some time.

Verrai in Italia per presentare i tuoi romanzi?

Vengo in Italia molto spesso perché ho molti amici e parenti. Se qualche libreria mi vuole, sono più che felice di venire (appena la regina Corona lo consente …)

Will you come to Italy to introduce your novels?

I am very often in Italy as I have many friends and relations there. If any bookshop wants me – I am more than happy to come (as long as queen Corona allows …)

Ci sono progetti cinematografici tratti dai tuoi libri?

Sarebbe il sogno della mia vita che si avvera in un modo tardivo e inaspettato. A parte le nascite dei miei figli e nipoti, sarebbe la cosa più felice che possa mai capitarmi, ma purtroppo la risposta è: No.

Any movie projects from your books?

That would be my life’s dream coming true in a late and unexpected way. Apart from the births of my children and grandchildren it would be the happiest that could ever happen to me – but sadly the answer is: No.

Quando uscirà in Italia la saga de Grand Hotel Odessa? Puoi parlarci un po’ di questa saga?

Sfortunatamente, questo non dipende da me. I miei editori e la mia agenzia cercano di vendere i diritti a editori stranieri e posso solo sperare che un editore italiano si interessi. Mi renderebbe molto felice. I due romanzi sono ambientati nella meravigliosa Odessa durante la prima metà del XX secolo: era un crogiolo europeo, una città veramente multiculturale, molto ebraica e merita molti libri.

When will be released it in Italy the saga of Grand Hotel Odessa? Can you tell us a bit about this saga?

Unfortunately, that is not up to me. My publishers and my agency try to sell the rights to foreign publishers and I can only hope that an Italian publisher will be interested in it. It would make me very happy. The two novels are set in wonderful Odessa during the first half of the Twentieth Century – she was a European melting pot, a truly multicultural, very Jewish city and deserves many books.

Infine, la domanda che non può mancare: a cosa stai lavorando?

Abbastanza stranamente – su un romanzo ambientato in parte in Italia. Non mi è ancora permesso di raccontare alcun dettaglio, ma forse sarò fortunata e sarà tradotto in italiano!

Finally, the inevitable question: what are you working on now?

Funnily enough – on a novel set partly in Italy. I am not allowed yet to tell any details – but maybe I will be lucky and get translated into Italian with that one!
